What is an Hospedaje?

We didn’t know when we first came here.

It took us a long time to be able to properly pronounce the word ‘hospedaje’.   (Oss Spa Dah Hey)....

Our night staff and receptionists welcome you to Soma

What makes us different being an 'hospedaje’ ?

It basically means a family run accommodation.  Which we are.  Though we have more amenities than the average hospedaje, we don’t have another word to describe Hospedaje Soma with.

We aren’t a hotel.  We don’t have hallways with rooms on both sides.

We aren’t a hostel.  Yes, we have dormitories, but we also have private cabins.

And we are happy that people travelling on a shoestring talk to people who are here on family vacations - we have often been complimented on the amount of fun these different groups have with one and other, which they don’t have anywhere else.

We aren’t a B&B.  You won’t be staying in a bedroom in our house and serving you breakfast on our kitchen table in the morning.

We aren’t a resort.  We provide some of the resort services, but we are way too casual to be a resort.

We aren’t a guesthouse, or an inn, or a motel.

So… without another word to adequately describe what we are, we are an hospedaje.

We may not be 5-star, but we will do our best to accommodate you.  We will organize volcano hikes, transportation, island tours, massages, and pedicures.

We hope you will enjoy cocktails next to the pool (or on the bench in the pool).

We are Canadian, but we have 100% Nicaraguan employees.  We do not believe in taking on foreign volunteers, as we know locals need employment.  Some of our staff speak English, but many will patiently provide non-Spanish speakers with a "Spanish-immersion experience" .

We live on an island.  We have electrical outages.  We have water outages.

We have tried to assuage these outages - we have invested in solar energy in the common areas, and we have dug a well.  We cannot, however, guarantee that you will have uninterrupted electric or water service.

We also cannot guarantee that you won't find one of our cats on your porch; that one of our dogs won't ask you to pet them; that a random hen won't lay an egg next to your room; that you won't see geckos running around; that a neighboring rooster won't crow; that a horse won't wander into the property to eat some grass; or that your experience here will be insect-free.  We are on a tropical island, surrounded by nature, and while that nature is beautiful, it can be 'more natural' than some expect.

We are… different.

We hope you enjoy the difference.
