Getting to San Jorge
The only way to get to Ometepe is from the port in San Jorge.
The fastest and most comfortable way to get to the port is by taxi. The cheapest and most adventurous way is by bus. The choice is yours.
Private Taxi
If you are tired of the busses, we would be happy to organize a private taxi to pick you up at your hotel or the airport. We hire drivers who are courteous, professional, and safe.
Please submit the form with your taxi request at least 24 hours before your arrival, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
The driver will pick you up at your desired location and drive you to the ferry gate in San Jorge. If you would like the driver to continue past the gate and help you with your luggage, you will need to pay the port entry fee of 20 córdobas for the taxi to enter the port area.
The fare should be paid directly to the driver in cash, either USD or the equivalent in córdobas.

Bus
Busses are the cheapest way to travel around Nicaragua. Express (expreso) busses connect most major cities and are much faster than the local busses. Transport from most bus terminals starts early, and you will have more options for busses if you leave in the morning. This is especially true on Sundays, when public transportation is limited.
From Managua, busses to Rivas leave from Mercado Roberto Huembes. A few of these busses may continue to San Jorge, but most will drop you off in Rivas where you can take a taxi to the port in San Jorge.
From other locations in Nicaragua, you will be dropped off in Rivas.
The price of a taxi from Rivas to San Jorge varies depending upon how busy the taxis are, how much luggage you have, and, of course, your bargaining skills.
When you arrive at the bus terminal, there will be taxis waiting. The regular taxi price from the bus terminal is $10, or C$360 - C$370.
The absolute cheapest price a single person without luggage can get a shared (colectivo) taxi for is C$30. To find one of these taxis, you will need to walk about 2 blocks away from the bus terminal. These taxis usually will not leave until they are full, and they can get ‘very full’ :)
Other taxis in Rivas charge around C$50 per person, or between C$150 - C$300 for the whole taxi.
If you are negotiating for a private taxi, we recommend being clear with the driver that the agreed price is for the taxi, not per person. Unfortunately, there are some unscrupulous drivers who would be happy to charge C$300 per person for a private taxi.
Please be aware that even if you negotiate a price for a private taxi, if the taxi isn’t full, the driver may stop to pick up others on the way to the port, and the others will pay less than you are paying.
