While many travellers visit Ometepe to hike Concepcion or Maderas, there are many other things to do and see around the island.

When you arrive at Hospedaje Soma, we will provide with a customized map of the island and will go over your options on how to best plan your stay on Ometepe and how to get around the island. We can arrange for a private driver, scooter/motorcycle/ATV rentals, and we have bicycles as well to rent to our guests.  Some of our more popular itineraries for a day exploring the island are below:

Itinerary 1: Explore Ometepe

  1. After breakfast at Soma, visit the butterfly garden and walk the nature trails of the Charco Verde Nature Reserve. Keep your eyes peeled for one of the 4 howler monkey troops that live in the park. There is a $5 entry fee to the park. Children are free.
  2. Your next stop is Finca El Porvenir for a short walk to see the petroglyphs, pre-Columbian stone carvings created by the indigenous people of Ometepe. There is a $3 entry fee to Finca El Porvenir. Children are free.
  3. Visit the farm-to-table, excellent restaurant, Cafe Campestre in Balgue for lunch, or Comedor Los Cocos in Santo Domingo for tasty basic fare. Or visit another restaurant of your choice.
  4. After lunch, stop for a swim in the cool mineral spring waters of Ojo de Agua. There is an entry fee of $5 per person.
  5. End your day with a stop at La Punta Jesus Maria to catch Ometepe’s most spectacular sunset.

Itinerary 2: Kayaking and more

  1. After breakfast at Soma, travel to Dreamland Tours in Santa Teresa for a kayak tour of the Rio Istian. You will take a motorboat to the mouth of the river and paddle with a guide through the calm waters. The total time is about 3 hours. The fee is $25 per person and includes a guide, motorboat transport, kayak and life vest.
  2. Visit the farm-to-table, excellent restaurant, Cafe Campestre in Balgue for lunch, or Comedor Los Cocos in Santo Domingo for tasty basic fare. Or visit another restaurant of your choice.

Itinerary 3: San Ramon Waterfall and more

  1. After breakfast at Soma travel to San Ramon on the other side of the island and hike through the cloud forest of Maderas to see the 80 meter high waterfall. If you are travelling in a 4×4 vehicle you can drive up the trail to get you within a 45 minute hike of the waterfall. If you don’t have a 4×4 vehicle, you will have to hike the whole way which will take 3.5 to 4 hours total.
  2. After hiking, head for lunch. Our two recommendations are the the farm-to-table Cafe Campestre in Balgue for high-quality food, or Comedor Los Cocos in Santo Domingo for tasty basic fare. There are many other food options in the area available. though!
  3. After lunch stop for a swim in the cool mineral spring waters of Ojo de Agua before returning to Soma. There is an entry fee of $5 per person to Ojo de Agua.
