Experience Ometepe

Challenge yourself by summiting the majestic Volcan Concepcion, chance seeing caiman while kayaking the Rio Istian, reward yourself by hiking to the gorgeous San Ramon waterfall, or simply get out and experience first-hand the beauty, nature and peaceful way of life Ometepe has to offer.

Getting Here & Away

Getting to Ometepe is an adventure in itself. All ferries to Ometepe leave from the port of San Jorge, near Rivas, and leave roughly every hour throughout the day. We can arrange mainland private taxis to take you directly from the airport or your previous accommodation directly to the port. Or you can be more adventurous and use the local buses to get you there.
Previously, flights were available as well, but still haven’t started up again. We will update the website when flights return to Ometepe.

Getting around Ometepe

You will need some form of transportation to be able to truly experience Ometepe and there are many options available. We can arrange scooter and ATV (quad) rentals through our trusted provider. Air conditioned private transport can be arranged for more comfortable getting around. We have bicycles available for rental through reception, or there is the “chicken bus” option, too.

Top Things to Do

Michele, Sarah, Terry or Javier can help you arrange any activity on Ometepe. Stop by reception to book.

Photograph the Sunset at la Punta Jesus Maria

Just 5-km from Soma, La Punta is a great place to stop to catch a spectacular Ometepe sunset. The sun goes down over the mainland at the end of “la punta”, a point of sand that juts out into the lake. Kiosks at the beach sell both food and drink for evening refreshment.

Conquer Concepcion

Lace up your hiking boots and challenge yourself to either a hike to the crater or try the more manageable lookout hike. We have excellent guides who will take you safely on your hike. Prices vary depending on the hike and number of people. Let us know your plans and we will make all the arrangements.

Kayak the Rio Istian

Caimans and turtles and birds, oh my! More of a wetland than a river, a guided kayak tour is not to be missed. You will be transported by speedboat to and from the mouth of the river where your kayak tour begins. Prices are about $25 per person for the tour. Budget around 3 hours for the tour, including speedboat transfers.

Hike to San Ramon Waterfall

An impressive 60-metre (197 foot) waterfall is the reward for this 3-4 hour (return) hike through the cloud forests of Volcan Maderas. The trail is a bit far from Hospedaje Soma, but the trip is well worth it!

Wander through Charco Verde

A butterfly garden, well-maintained trails, stunning views of the volcanoes, your own private beach, and families of howler monkeys make the Charco Verde Nature Park a lovely place to spend a few hours. Bikes are permitted inside the park.

Take a refreshing dip at Ojo de Agua

Cool spring water flows constantly through the two rough swimming holes set in an idyllic tropical setting. Food is available and definitely don’t miss the coco loco!
